She Said “Yes”!

Back in about 1985, Dr. Henry L. Lettermann told his Understanding Literature students (of whom I was one): “Find the Reader — the one who reads what you write before anyone else does. Find the Reader and marry it. That’s what I did, and it’s wonderful.” By grace, I’ve found a girl who, on our first date, said, “I’ve ordered Dragonfly.” And then she proceeded to read it, despite her unbelievably busy schedule. And then we had a deep discussion of it.

It is with inexpressible joy and with trembling before the Lord that I announce to you here that my dear one, Julie, said “Yes” in reply to my proposal this week! (Well, actually she said an emphatic “Yeah!” and then formalized it to “Yes!”) So, by God’s infinite grace, I can now type, for the very first time, that I have a fiancee. We are engaged!

Fred & Julie, Self-Portrait, Frick Park, Fall 2012

We started dating last July. She lives a little less than an hour away from me, but we’ve proven (by grace) that interposing miles are not such a great obstacle.

Like me, Julie has been a missionary overseas for many years. She’s been back in the States a little longer than I have, and she’s a lot farther along in her education.

February 2013

She’s working on her PhD in Intercultural Studies, particularly focusing on worship in her mission field. She teaches at three different colleges/community colleges. And last semester, she actually had her students reading this blog and doing writing assignments based on it! (Which is why I waited to say anything about us here . . . had to wait for the fulness of time . . . had to wait for that semester to end!) She speaks at least three languages, plays piano and guitar, and sings like an angel! I absolutely love her family, too — it’s been delightful getting to know them, and they’ve been so warm, accepting, and supportive!

the ring

You know, I’d never thought much about diamonds in my life. I always wondered what all the fuss was about, when you could make something many-faceted and shiny out of plastic. But shopping for this ring, I understood. I began to feel a bit Dwarvish, enchanted with the sparkle of precious stones. Diamonds areย pretty. And you can’t get the same effect with plastic! Of all the rings I looked at, this simple, elegant round band with the single round-cut stone kept calling to me and whispering Julie’s name. I couldn’t help making all sorts of connections to The Lord of the Rings,ย of course, throughout the process. Fortunately for all concerned, I kept them (mostly) to myself. This rather looks like one of the three rings for the Elves, doesn’t it? I’m thinking Nenya, the Ring of Waters, crafted by Celebrimbor — and the only one of the three to remain with its original owner for the duration! (Bodes well for an engagement ring, don’t you think?) Celebrimbor himself gave it to the Lady Galadriel, and she used it to bring healing to Middle-earth. This one of Julie’s is white gold, probably the closest metal we’ve got to mithril.ย And a white stone, too, just like Nenya’s! On the night of our engagement, Julie agreed that she was very lucky indeed that the hand of Sauron never touched or sullied any of the three rings. Sigh . . . ours will be a very nerdy and adventuresome marriage!

(I think on the morning of the wedding, I’m going to have to imitate Bilbo. I’ll dash toward the church, and I’ll have my Best Man yell out, “Mr. Frederic! Where are you going?” And I’ll wildly shout back, “I’m going on an Adventure!”)

Christmas Eve 2012

We complement each other very well. We laugh at the same things. Our beliefs line up. She’s more academic/non-fiction to my fantasist/fiction, but we each respect and appreciate each other’s disciplines, and we’re both writers and teachers. (I can spill the beans now — it’s her college classes I’ve been substitute teaching for, when she’s been on academic/learning trips.) One of the really nice aspects of a relationship, I’ve noticed, is the joy of introducing each other to favorite stories, be they books or movies. Also music! Julie recently showed me the movie Babette’s Feast,ย which belongs on the small shelf of your ten favorite films of all time. If you haven’t seen it, do so. Trust me. It has unforgettable things to say about art, love, sacrifice, and life.

Anyway, “Find the reader and marry it.” Remember my summer office, the writing space in Frick Park? This greeted me there one afternoon:

Frick Park

I am complete. All glory, honor, praise, and thanks be to God!

  2. Binsers says:

Congratulations! I will share our wedding motto with you . . . It has worked for 26 1/2 years for us . . . “Love is being stupid together.” God bless you both!

  3. Preacher says:

Congrats, Fred! This sounds like a marriage made in nerd heaven! ๐Ÿ™‚ You deserve the best, and Julie is also certainly getting that! Blessings to you both!

  4. Jedibabe says:

So very happy to hear your wonderful news! You sound perfectly suited to one another. Wishing you much, much happiness in the many years to come.

  5. Tim (who's now) in England says:

Congratulations Fred. I wish you and Julie the best. My wife and I have just celebrated our 17th anniversary, and I still recommend marriage to people I like. I’m sure yours will be a great success.

    • Mrs Spamman says:

Congratulations! I pray God’s richest blessings on you both, as well as on your marriage. Love the pictures. You two look great together.

  6. Catherine G says:

I am SO HAPPY for you both! (Actually, I was squealing while I read this, which prompted my roommate to ask if I was crazy.) I hope, pray and wish all the best for your future together! ๐Ÿ˜€

  7. General Edith Piaf says:

Congratulations! As a zombie army commander you may think that I am immune to the stories of connection and love, but I need only hearken back to my days as a Parisian Chanteuse to remember the grandeur. Congrats! This is fantastic news!

  8. Hagiograph says:

Fred, congrats! This is great news. The line about “find the reader” found a much more interesting paraphrase from my mom many years ago.

Rita and I were a confusing couple to my mom because I don’t think she fully understood our relationship, but she had a great phrase “There’s no pot so bent you can’t find a lid to fit it!”

I hope you have found the lid to your bent pot!

  9. Michelle Muenzler says:

Wow! Congratulations to the both of you! It’s wonderful to find that person who is a perfect fit for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. The description of Frodo first seeing Arwen in Rivendell may apply to Fred and Julie … “Such beauty in living thing Frodo had never seen before, nor imagined in his mind.”

I think also of the lines in Lothlorien:
“There was a light upon the land for which his language had no name.”

I rejoice for you, my friend of 40-some years. An email will be on the way quite soon …

“…and the greatest of these is love.”

  11. jhagman says:

White gold? Shades of Thomas Covenant! Now we know what drew you from Japan. Best wishes for a long and bookish life together.

    • General Edith Piaff (Zombie) says:

      LOL! Thomas Covenant??? Really? ๐Ÿ™‚

(I LOVED. L-O-V-E-D the first Thomas Covenant trilogy. It was the first time I read what appeared to be an adult theme in a fantasy novel that wasn’t stripped down to binary modes of good-vs-evil. My favorite bit in the Ur-Lord series I was “Vain”. It was among the most interesting and frustrating characters.)

But clearly NOTHING applicable to this joyous news! Shame on you! ๐Ÿ™‚

      • jhagman says:

No,,Julie is now a white gold wielder, and remember: when the One Ring was destroyed, the three rings lost their power! I can only blame your ignorance by the fact you are French and Dead,,dommage Madame Edith!

  12. I agree with Edith … the first three Covenant books were pretty good, even if I could not stand Covenant himself.

That said, I think the white gold was meant here as a stand-in for mithril, of which Nenya was forged. Celebrimbor did indeed give that ring to Galadriel; Vilya (mightiest of the Three) went to Gil-galad and hence to Elrond, while Cirdan gave Narya to Gandalf.

    • jhagman says:

What! Here is one for the record books! Lord Brown Snowflake agreeing with the French! In Donaldson’s books, Thomas Covenant’s white gold wedding ring never loses power, whereas Nenya becomes a mere pretty bauble. The white gold ring blasts Lord Foul ( a truly Satanic being) Nenya merely controls the weather. What we know about Nenya comes from Christopher Tolkien disguised (for royalty purposes) as J.R.R. Tolkien- a real travesty. Ha! Thus I defeat the French Apologist Monsieur Snowflake, and his cohort the Zombie Pop Singer!

  13. jhag: I am no French apologist; I am a Tolkien apologist, especially all things Elvish, and most especially, all things Noldor.

“Such is not their power. Those who wield them did not desire power or domination nor hoarded wealth, but rather wisdom, healing, understanding and the power to maintain all things unstained. There things the Elves of Middle-Earth have achieved to some measure, but all will be to their undoing and their hearts and minds will be open to Sauron should he regain the One. It would be better if the Three had never been. That is his purpose.”
“What then would happen if the Ruling Ring were destroyed?”
“Some hope that the Three, which Sauron never touched, would then become free and their rulers might heal the hurts of the world he has caused But maybe if the One were destroyed the Three would also fail, and many things that are fair would be lost forever.”
“Yet this chance all the Elves would risk, if by it the Sauron be destroyed and the fear of his dominion forever removed.”

    • General Edith Piaf says:

Already my Frankish poison works! I need say almost nothing and I can get perfectly reasonable people to battle each other! Bwahahaha!

My destruction of the West is nearly complete! First I get people to fight over JRRT references and then soon, soon….

  14. In Rivendell there was memory of ancient thing; in Lorien those ancient things lived on. The Elves feared and distrusted the outside world; evil and been seen and heard there: wolves were howling on the borders of the wood: but on the land of Lorien there was no stain.

  15. fsdthreshold says:

What better celebration can there be than friends talking about The Lord of the Rings? ๐Ÿ™‚ And even being silly — you’re being silly here, for which I’m grateful!

    • jhagman says:

Me thinks, Fred your friends will give you a most odd bachelor party, rife with Hagio’s alchemy, and the Snowflake’s Tolkienish riff-raff. Good luck with that,,,I don’t know if you are the sort, but I recommend vast, hobbitish amounts of ale to deaden the effects of bizarre entertainments.

  16. General Edith Piaf says:

So when does Fred’s S.O. make a “guest blog” post? It’s only fair that she should have to be tossed to the denizens of the blog to be devoured here on these hallowed pages.

    Speaking of which…braaaaaaaiiiiinnnnnnsssss.

  17. General Edith Piaf says:

You know, since it is Valentine’s Day and my corporeal form was once filled with love and in light of this joyous occasion of Fred’s upcoming nuptials, I’m taking a break from leading my zombie army of death to destroy the West and getting back to my musical roots.

I have penned this wondrous song. When I wrote it it wasn’t necessarily intended to be a love song, but in this joyous time I like to imagine it is a song about the FIRES of passion….as sung by Ronald Reagan to an Electronica Dance beat.

  18. fsdthreshold says:

Heh, heh! General, so far I’ve listened to “The Fire Will Consume Them Too,” “Do I Need To Be Here For This?”, and “2IXST001.” Very interesting stuff!

    • General Edith Piaf says:

Most of the time I use a microKorg synthesizer, a Casio keyboard and an electric guitar but for the “Fire” I used an iKaossilator and manipulated the vocals using Audacity software to clip and loop the snippets of speech.

The microKorg is a pretty sweet little synth but not as intuitive as the vintage Arp 2600 I used back in college (I vastly prefer analog synths).

My guitar is down for the count right now, some loose wire results in a lot of noise, so I’ve mostly been playing on the keyboards.

What fascinates me is that with limited musical skills, overdubbing helps me almost hide really bad playing!

  19. Hagiograph says:

    WHAT HORROR HAS BEEN WROUGHT???

Ok, couldn’t help myself (I can only imagine I was taken over by the evil of General Edith Piaf) but I found this very nice song on line! It’s really nice and well performed!
    http://vimeo.com/17476065

And I added some stuff to it (and shortened it). I’m so sorry. Don’t worry it’s set to “private” so I have to give the link out.

Here is what I have done to it:

This is what I end up doing with a long weekend and no adult supervision.

    • fsdthreshold says:

Ella! Thank you! So good to hear from you! Are you ever coming back to World Fantasy? ๐Ÿ™‚ I won’t be going to Brighton this fall, but hopefully after that I’ll get back to regular attendance.

      • Ella says:

My attendance at World Fantasy is up in the air(Brighton’s a bit far away). I’ve been working a booth for a local publisher – last fall he dragged me(oh what a chore that was *sarcasm* lol) to the World Science Fiction con in Chicago. I’m confident there is much conventioning in my future!
Our paths are bound to cross at some point:)

  20. fsdthreshold says:

General Edith, I must confess that I couldn’t get your Vimeo mischief project to play . . . Has anyone else been able to listen to it? I’m mighty curious!

    • Hagiograph says:

It is now open to the public. I suggest that if you can adjust the bass and treble to lower the bass as I mixed it bottom heavy.

The master recording of the tracks sounded fine in the headphones but on soundcloud not so much.

  21. Buurenaar says:

I go away to a semester of rhetoric and writing, and I come back to find that fantastic things have happened in my absence, so I guess now I know how Donna Noble feels. As you were. Congratulations! Also, I will bribe someone to tie glued-shut copies of Twilight to the back of your car after the reception (the only book I can condone destroying). May your love be as Beren and Luthien’s…but without all the bad stuff. Light shine on your way together, and may shadows cloak your passage.
