What's New

It’s an exciting year for new developments! First of all, in April 2008,“The
Star Shard” began its year-long serialization in Cricket Magazine.

I am overwhelmed that the Cricket editors were willing to devote this much space to my story. They tell me that this is only the second time in the magazine’s 35-year history that they’ve run a story of this length. (The first was The Ordinary Princess, by M. M. Kaye—I remember it.) I absolutely love the illustrations by Emily Fiegenschuh!

In May 2008, Cricket is launching a new interactive feature of their website: a place for readers to communicate with their favorite authors and illustrators. Emily and I will be logging in once or twice weekly throughout the year to answer readers’ questions about “The Star Shard.” Please join us there at www.cricketmag.com!

Some wonderful news is that my novelette “The Bone Man” (Fantasy & Science Fiction, December 2007) was named to Locus Magazine’s Recommended Reading List for 2007, which also places it on the ballot for the 2008 Locus Awards. Just being nominated among the likes of one of my heroes—Steven Millhauser—is a tremendous honor! The story has also been chosen for inclusion in Wildside Press’s Horror: The Best of the Year 2008, edited by Stefan Dziemianowicz.

Black Gate Magazine has my story “World’s End” in their inventory. No publication date is scheduled yet, but it’s coming. . . .

The Witching Wild, a young-adult novel, is currently being shopped around, as is Agondria, a novel-in-stories rooted in classical mythology. Watch this spot for breaking news!

Last but not least, the next issue of Ozment’s House of Twilight has promised to feature "Shadowbender,” my first installment of the Unsung Heroes story cycle, a collaboration with Gabriel Dybing and Nicholas Ozment.

Soli Deo Gloria!
